Avimosum
Species Appearance: Often considered an angelic offshoot, this species is known for it's soft, yet angular features and wings. They take after several different avian species, and a couple can achieve "alternate" forms, that allows the user to access the adaptations of their "root" species.
When in neutral form, the Avimosum can only be differentiated from normal humans by their wings. An individual's wings display it's rank by size and complexity. Often, one's wings can show another it's root species as well.
Species Ranking: Common Avimosum take the form of common garden birds, such as Mourning Doves, Pigeons, Chickens, Robins, Larks, etc. The Common Avimosum make up about 80% of the entire species. The next class would be Advanced Avimosum, who often take the form of birds of prey, such as Hawks, Vultures, etc. Advanced Avimosum make up about 15% of the entire species. Royal Avimosum are the ruling class of the species, and are hand picked at birth out of the remaining 95% of the population by the Monarch of the species. The species that make up the royal family varies, but the family often chooses obscure markings, and regal breeds.
This is done with a quick ceremony, that is magically and spiritually binding. Once you have been sorted into your "division" you cannot switch out. Your species, however, is not determined by The Monarch. This is determined by your family line, and the ancestry that comes with it. If all of one's ancestors were Common Avimosum, than they can only be of a species that is commonly accepted as Common.
The Royal family (which is what the entire class of Avimosum are called) usually consists of the current Monarch, and their Soulmate or chosen partner. Very rarely is a successor chosen from the outside, but it's not impossible or unheard of.
If you couldn't tell a royal by their wings, a Royal will have a tattoo-like marking, that shows up somewhere on their body. It is placed so that it can be both easily displayed, and or covered up. Some think that these markings are personal, and are only to be shared with your soul-mate. The Lesser varieties of Avimosum have markings as well, but are smaller and less noticeable. The normal markings are only as big as about a handspan, and usually appear on the stomach area around puberty.
Species Mannerism: Avimosum are a very civil, and advanced race. They work on a strict social structure that is based on their positions within the natural structure. Extra courtesies are paid to those of whom are of higher rank than the individual, and those of equal rank are expect to treat each other with a mutual respect.
Other races (especially ones who aren't well known) are treated with respect, but veiled disdain or prejudice can often be seen. If the race is a well known friend of the Avimosum, they are treated with the mutual respect that is expected from equals.
Species Abilities: The Avimosum have many varied talents, mainly in Magic. The Common variety can only perform simple healing and combat, and rely heavily on brute force. Many advance to become masters in swordplay or hand-to-hand combat. The Advanced vary largely, The amount of Magic and Sword users is just about split down the middle, and both can become skilled at what they do. The Royals have a choice as to what they wish to focus on, but many choose to study Magic. Very few decide to study both, but the rare Royal will.
If a Royal does choose to study both, achieving mastery in both is hard won, and oftentimes can take hundreds of years. Going at the fastest pace possible to learn, it could take a little over 30 years, give or take. The sacrifice of running the fast track is a probable loss of time. A couple of years could be knocked off of an average 500-1000 year lifespan in exchange for the skills required to lead.
Important Ad-Ons: The Avian Empire is a mainly Avimosum-populated society, and is where most of the race choose to live, even after adolescence. Most who do not live within the Empire are either outcasts, or were born to non-citizens.
Avimosum don't often have children with anyone but their True Mate (or Soul-Mate), usually this ends up being another Avimosum, but It is not uncommon for one of another species to be a soul-mate to an Avimosum.
